RAF Upottery (Smeatharpe) is a former WW2 airfield in East Devon. The airfield is approximately 6 miles away from Honiton and 140miles away from southwest of London. During the war it was used as a transport airfield and for a antisubmarine patrols. After the war it was closed in 1948. Today the remains of the airfield are located on private land being used as agricultural fields. There are still buildings located on the site, some of the airfield is used by a small flying club and another section is occasionally used for stock car racing on a purpose built concrete oval, also some parts are used for rallying, drag racing and drifting which is classed as a motorsport.
Dunkeswell aerodrome is an airfield located near Smeatharpe and Honiton. the airfield is now a busy civilian airfield with a mix of light aircraft and parachuting. in ww2 the airfield opened in 1943. The station was originally planned to be a RAF fighter command, then a RAF coastal command airfield, but it was transferred for use by American units. It was used by the Americans as a antisubmarine command.
Portsmouth was famous for the Blitz, there where 3 major raids that took place on August 24th 1940, January 10th 1941 and march 10th 1941. During the 4 year period of the Portsmouth blitz 930 people were killed, 1,216 hospitalised and a further 1,621 suffered less severe injuries. it is estimated that 10% of the city's 63,000 homes where destroyed. German air raids against Britain during the blitz followed Germany's failure to establish air supority in the battle of Britain.
