Slapton Sands (exercise tiger):
Exercise tiger was important in 1942. At Slapton Sands
many people where made to evacuate due too a D-Day practise. Many people where
forced to leave their homes and move to a different place. One reason why people where forced out of the homes was because they had to be evacuated so that Slapton sands could create a practise before they did this over in France, Normandy. They also wanted their troops to practise for this too. 3000 people where evacuated to different villages or towns, many of them stayed with their families or friend's. Not everyone agree with what was going on and they didn't have the same view on everything. When the villagers of Slapton where told they had to evacuate they also had to take their belonging and their pets/animals with them. Reg Hannaford was a citizen of Slapton sands, his family owned a butchers near the sea front of Slapton. Reg believed that it was going to be hard to evacuate because of the business. when everyone one was told to evacuate Reg described the evacuation like being an adventure. Reg' parents where convinced that it was going to be hard because of their family business but they had no decision whether they could stay or not. Miss Eccles was involved during the D-Day in Slapton, she described it as upsetting because she could see the vans collecting family's belonging and taking them some where else. Her feelings where mixed because she also described that he would always look forward to the Americans that used to have a weekly dance together, she loved to watch them all.
Slapton sands was a major practise during ww2 more troops died than they actually did during the D-Day at France in Normandy. It was a big event that many people experienced and had to move away from. it must have broken so many family's and there loved ones that died during the practise.
