My family where well known for wardens and nurses during WW2. My Great Nan was a warden as well as a nurse, her name was Win Bristow. My great Granddad was a warden and his name was Ron Bristow. During WW2 my great granddad would go around everyone's house's whilst the siren was going on, he would warn people to close their curtains and turn off all of their lights my great nan would help him do this too. This would of been frightening for him as he or my great nan could have got caught during their roles. It must of also been a scary experience as they where both still outside whilst the siren was going off. People in the villages where they used to warn them, must off been frightened as they would have heard the siren and would have panicked. Sadly my great nan passed away at the age of 91, and I never met my great granddad but they are very inspiring. They both lived in Speen, Berkshire.
The equipment used by a warden would be a rattle which was used to warn people that things where going on and that they had to close everything such as curtains and lock doors they would also turn out lights. the wardens would wear helmets what looked like below. the nurses wore a badge like the wardens to let people know that they where nurses.
