The Blitz took place mostly in Exeter and Plymouth and left these two cities in ruins. In early summer 1940 it began. The first bomb was dropped midday Saturday the 6th of July 1940. Plymouth was the key target as it is the home of its own dockyard. The two different attacks took place in January 1941 and April 1941. When the attacks happened 3,754 houses where destroyed and 18,398 where seriously damaged. Many people where killed (1,172) and 4,448 where injured. The first bombing that took place in Plymouth caused three houses that where demolished and 2 where wrecked. Between 1940 and 1941 there were 127 large scale night raids. In 1941 Winston Churchill visited Plymouth. He toured the area's that where worst hit by the bombings.
The first bombing hit St Thomas, Exeter in the Second World War, on the 7th of
August 1940. After the first air raid, the city suffered a further 18 air raids.
But they still brought fear and some casualties to the population. In
1942, Hitler was enraged by the RAF's bombing of the ancient German cathedral
city of Lubeck, so Hitler wanted revenge. On the night of 28/29 of March 1942,
Hitler decided to launch a series of raids on some of England's most beautiful,
unimportant towns (because England had destroyed Lubeck). He used a tourist guide to select the targets and on 23rd and 25th April, Exeter was the first to be hit.
